Pay Raise and Increased Gas Price Reimbursement on the Horizon

-

According to a recent article from Government Executive, federal employees are poised to receive a pay raise and other benefits increases in 2023. The article states that the 2023 appropriations bill was unveiled with the inclusion of $9 million for the White House Office of Administration, a $1 billion increase for the Internal Revenue Service and a $75 million increase for the Office of Personnel Management.

Pay Raise

In March, the administration proposed a 4.6% pay raise for federal employees, but according to the Government Executive article, “62 lawmakers urged leaders on the appropriations committee to provide federal employees with a 5.1% average pay raise“.

Gas Mileage Increase

In addition to a proposal of a 5.1 percent pay increase in January countering the proposed 4.6 percent increase, the “Internal Revenue Service announced last week that it would increase the maximum gas mileage rate that is allowed to be deducted as a business expense for the rest of 2022, a move that effectively increases the amount federal employees can be reimbursed for official travel conducted in a personal automobile.” This would potentially increase the maximum gas mileage rate from 58.5 cents per mile to 62.5 cents per mile beginning July 1.
